So now, when I have no particular place to ride, it's off to the River for some beautiful diverse scenery followed up by some great twistie action!!
James.
Our rides and adventures, all in one place for your reading enjoyment. From British Columbia and Alberta, the rides where we found something new.
I remember it was mid August, Michael had not yet joined our little group & I was enjoying some alone time on the bike. On tuesday night, I was attending one of our weekly bike nights @ the local Timmy's when I overheard a good friend talking about a ride he had discovered that meandered along the river. I asked about it & we ended up making plans to ride it together. The next day was an off work day for me & I found myself in the general area where this ride began so I decided to try & find where it began. I had got general directions from him & after a couple wrong turns, I ended up coming down a hill & found myself riding alongside the river. I stopped at a pull off spot, hopped off the bike, walked across the road & proceeded to fill my face with nice ripe juicy Saskatoon berries growing all along the river banks. With incriminating stains on my hands, I rode further down the road to where it intersected with another road. There was another pull off spot here so I got off the bike, walked along the riverbank & filled my face with wild raspberries!! With purple hands, I re-mounted the bike & continued. We call this the River ride but there's actually only maybe 2 miles of river and then it veers away. By now, I was starting to enjoy this new found territory, I turned onto a main road & rode for a few miles until the road started to narrow & I found myself riding on well worn old roads along with some gravel stretches, lined with trees on both sides. I spotted a familiar clump of trees, stopped here & walked in a ways before I saw a concrete slab, the tell tale sign that a house had once stood here. As I rode further on this ride, I was amazed at how the landscape kept changing, one minute, fields the next boreal forest. Some areas reminded me of areas I'd seen in my native BC, then there'd be a hilly area followed with sparsley treed areas. Every time I'd come to an intersection, I'd make a left turn, trying to extend this ride as long as possible. I remember after taking one left turn, I glimpsed 2 deer on my right side. As I got closer, they started running along side my bike for a good half mile before the one crossed the road in front of me, then a ways further, the other one crossed. By now I was smiling pretty good & having too much fun on this newly found ride!! Just when I thought it couldn't get any better, there on my left side, hiding up on a hillside was an old Ghost house!! I shook my head..... this ride had it all!!!! After a quick investigation of this house (I made an in depth visit at a later date, will post on here shortly), I was back on the bike for no more than 60 seconds & there to my left........ another ancient Ghost house but this one had a rather grumpy looking older gentleman looking like the grim reaper guarding the deep secrets of this old place. As I slowed to look at the old place, the old guy's eyes burned a hole in my helmet so I decided maybe a visit was out of order & kept riding! Now what I have to tell you next will be hard to believe, it certainly was for me but I tell only the truth! I was riding along when all of a sudden, I came to a sharp left turn followed by a sweeping right which came to a more sharp left, then some mild turns coupled with slight hilly areas...... more lefts, rights, I found myself going faster & faster till the ride abruptly ended at a main highway..... the ride was over & what a way to end it!!! I had found the sweetest set of twisties since my days in BC! I immediately turned the bike around & rode them again, then turned & repeated the process one more time!!! A few months later, I was able to share it with Michael & I think He rode it for the next week or two!!
So now, when I have no particular place to ride, it's off to the River for some beautiful diverse scenery followed up by some great twistie action!! James.

Yep, I remember very well my first River Run. I was on the GS750 in the fall with the sun shining and James on the Rat XS. It was the best riding experience I had since I had returned from my trip to the Kootenay region in BC (moto-meca). I did ride this almost every day for about 2 weeks just to find new stuff and to explore the Northern Bruderhiem area. Incredible gravel to ride here too.
